Jon Lovitz beats a Dick - Senator Craig take note

Sometimes beating is better than stroking when it's an irritating and obnoxious Andy Dick.

With all the gay bathroom sex talk in the news of late, thanks to Senator Craig, I though I would begin with a little levity and write about something I had intended to address some time ago. Besides, I like the title and recent events are a good excuse to get this one out of the way. I'll address the Craig matter after this.

So, back to this Dick beating.

"I just wanted him to say, 'Oh, I'm sorry,'" said Lovitz. "Then he leans into me, 'Well you know why I said that? Because you said I killed Phil Hartman that's the first thing you said to me when you got on the show.' I just lost it so I grabbed him by the shirt and I pushed him against the wall. And he's just smiling at me, and then I realized 'oooh, here's my chance.' So I grabbed him by his shirt and pushed him really hard and I smashed his back and his head into the bar. And I did it again. I would have kept going, but the doorman broke it up." (source)

Judging from the article, it was well deserved. Then again, Andy Dick is usually so irritating, it would still be deserved without the sick comment about Phil Hartman. It seems Dick's character on NewsRadio was actually not a moment of good acting, but rather, Andy merely being Andy. Either that, or he's one of those actors who gets lost in the character. Unfortunately, that doesn't provide much sympathy for his antics either, considering the show ended in 1999. There's some good video of Lovitz on Larry King here, where you can hear him imitate the Dick's squeal.

Now if you want some comedy concerning Senator Larry Craig, Rightwingsparkle has a round up here and Jim-Rose.com references a very relevant Seinfeld episode - heh.

As to my view on the Senator Craig matter, it seems incredibly odd that he pled guilty and tried to say it was entrapment in the after arrest interview. If you got entrapped, it was into doing something after all. Perhaps he was just that confused and nervous that he wasn't thinking of the implications of saying that? Whatever the case may be, he had several months to seek counsel before entering his plea.

If we go with the what appears to be the general consensus, that he did it, there is still discussion by some people about whether or not such signals should be enough for an arrest. The argument seems to be it was merely flirting, though debased as the apparent intent is, and not lewd in a way that would have been recognized by the average person. I'm not sure I agree, but maybe a good lawyer could have argued that in court. The problem being, it's admitting to intent, which would have immediately validated claims that Craig is gay and has sought out sexual activity like this before.

It seems to me that Craig only had a series of bad choices and took his chances with the officer saying it wouldn't be reported to the media, that he just needed to quit lying and agree with the officer's version of the event. What's truly sad, is what his family has to go through and what they may have been enduring for some time before this. Our choices do have consequences. Unfortunately, we sometimes only realize this when people were supposed to care about the most are also hurt by our actions.

Of course there is much screeching from some about hypocrisy, as Craig had voted against gay marriage and had a perfect score from a Christian group, regarding his politics. But if one is going to make that a banner to wave in the face of family values Republicans, what should be said about the Democrat party which still has Barney Franke in office and Bill Clinton who didn't resign?

While I think, at the very least, and barring no major new developments in his favor, Senator Craig should not run for re-election, I think we can learn some valuable lessons from this. If one wants to beat a dick in a Minneapolis airport bathroom, it would help if it was Andy Dick and you don't tap his foot in the process. For those who can't help but resort to said foot tappage, it's obvious what the next course of action should be, preceding even the practical step of lawyering up. Just whip out that Democrat party affiliation card. If that's not possible, at least change parties before entering  your plea, as you'll at least save your political career by doing so and probably pull in some nice advances for the book you can now write.

The world's irony meter just exploded

I'm not sure if it was because of what Hillary! Clinton just said or due to a jihadi jackass doubling over in laughter over what she said and accidentally triggering the martyr belt he was wearing. Let's take a look at her latest pronouncement.

Hillary Rodham Clinton said Wednesday the Iraqi Parliament should replace embattled Prime Minister

with a "less divisive and more unifying figure" to reconcile political and religious factions. (source)

Yes, that Hillary complained about another politician being too divisive to unite opposing factions.

Does this mean we can request Congress to replace her?

I might was well note that she's also a bit uninformed, which is hardly surprising. I covered some recent changes by Maliki here.

At least her side is consistent. Too bad it's being consistent at ignoring what's actually happening in Iraq and using that willful ignorance to justify dangerous and naive policies.

Let the screaming and caterwauling begin...

Or at least the usual fallacies, shallow dismissals, sneers and dogmatism continue. A new movie is set to premiere next year on that holy day for some, the birthday of Charles Darwin, though Richard Dawkins' birthday would have been a good pick as well. The offense being that this movie is about the controversy in science and academia over Intelligent Design.

From the press release (Thanks to Evolution News and Views)

In a Major Motion Picture Release Ben Stein exposes the frightening agenda of the "Darwinian Machine" in Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed, Coming February 2008.

[...]

Ben Stein, the lovable, monotone teacher from Ferris Bueller's Day Off and The Wonder Years is on a journey to answer one of the biggest questions ever asked: Were we designed or are we simply the end result of an ancient mud puddle struck by lightning? Stein, who is also a lawyer, an economist, a former presidential speech writer, author and social commentator, is stunned by what he finds on his journey. He discovers an elitist scientific establishment that has traded in its skepticism for dogma. But even worse, along the way, Stein uncovers a long line of biologists, astronomers, chemists and philosophers who have had their reputations destroyed and their careers ruined by a scientific establishment that allows absolutely no dissent from Charles Darwin's theory of random mutation and natural selection.

I'm guessing there will be a number of critiques by the holy ones of Darwinism, before the movie is actually released in theaters. I won't be surprised if some write reviews that make us wonder if they even bothered to see the movie, much as they did when they wrote reviews of Michael Behe's latest book, The Edge of Evolution: The Search for the Limits of Darwinism.

You can find out more about the movie at the official website here.

I'll be sure to see this movie, if for anything, the thought of some dogmatic atheists grinding their teeth to nubs, makes me sleep well at night. It would be quite satisfying if the box office take for this film exceeds that of other documentaries lauded by the Hollywood left. I have no idea if it can achieve this, but watching the numbers come in will be fun nonetheless.

If there's a sequel, I recommend the birthday of Richard Dawkins as the premiere date.

The Rational Response Squad

Or as I like to call them, the (ir)rationals. They're that little hardcore online atheist group consisting of core members Brian Sapient (The Sap), Kelly and Rook Hawkins (Little Rookie). One of their hobbies is pimping the foolish notion that Jesus was just a myth. I've noted their idiocy before, but this latest is rather fun to watch. Apparently another atheist (he isn't the first) had some constructive criticism for them.

A few excerpts:

Until you Rational Responders up your credentials and experience you will continue to come off like the loose change guys: You’re amateur, emotional, and unprofessional.

[...]

Either stop being unprofessional and arrogant or earn the right to be unprofessional and arrogant through life experience or education. Until then you’re making us look bad. (source - thanks to Frank Walton)

Be sure to go through the thread to see the how the (ir)rationals reacted to his posting that letter on their forum. Ah yes, open-minded and free thinkers those (ir)rationals show themselves to be. <- That was sarcasm, for those (ir)rationals groupies who would be confused. I'm willing to bet a penny or two a few may drop by as these posts tend to serve as an idiot magnet, much like my posts about 9-11 conspiracy nuts tend to do.

On a final note, it's rather interesting that an atheist offering criticism of their methods and such also made a 9-11 conspiracy nut comparison. Just say' in.

Gay marriage vs tradition

An interesting article addresses this conflict and has criticism for extremes on both sides of the issue.

But the debate over the idea of gay marriage has brought out concerns by one extremist end that it will lead to people marrying their livestock to Gay Gestapo charges of homophobic bigotry against those opposed to same-sex nuptials.

That last part about the Gay Gestapo might go down easier for some, if they knew that the author is Tammy Bruce, who describes herself as "an independent gay woman", after saying "neither accusation is valid".

She continues, with something that I've heard before, but it was second hand and I couldn't verify it.

I think it’s time to make a few things clear. First of all, despite what you hear from the Gay Elite, there is not a consensus in the gay community about this issue. We do not all operate in the cultural or political equivalent of a Vulcan mind-meld.

She indicates that she respects traditional institutions and criticizes the knee jerk tendency of the left to tear them down. She also makes a good point about amending the Constitution on this matter. After all, isn't this one of our cherished traditional institutions? On that point, my view is that a Constitutional amendment should not take away the option from state legislatures to decide the matter. It's one thing, to protect said legislatures from overreaching judicial activists, but it would be just as much an overreach, to prevent them from instituting some legally defined relationship other than traditional marriage.

She also hits pretty hard at some arguments offered in favor of gay marriage.

Gays ultimately need to stop looking to government for unconditional love and approval of who we are. Andrew Sullivan, a political commentator and writer many of you know and respect, wrote a piece for Time magazine where he actually equated governmental recognition of gay marriage as a necessary element to all gay people feeling accepted and wanted. He claimed that anything other than marriage will “build a wall between gay people and their own families.”

While his story was personal and moving, the argument was, frankly, nonsense, and representative of the general mentality among the gay elite. It also gives the government and other people’s opinions far too much power over the quality of our lives and effectively eliminates our own responsibility for our happiness.

Part of the fight for gay marriage is based in Sullivan’s lament—that it is only governmental recognition of who are that will make us whole. Let’s get real—the only thing that will make gay people whole is personal acceptance of ourselves by ourselves. Instead, we are still looking to Mommy or Daddy, now in the form of Society, to tell us we’re Okay. To sanctify, if you will, our lives and relationships.

Before some heads explode over that, remember Tammy Bruce is "an independent gay woman". Then again, the very extreme might just vaporize completely with that added detail.

Read her entire article. It's thoughtful and a perspective both sides need to hear from.

Anne Rice on politics

While I disagree with her endorsement of Hillary!, what she has to say is interesting and can give those of us who are pro-life, as she is, something to think about. Be sure to read her entire article.

I have heard many anti-abortion statements made by people who are not Democrats, but many of these statements do not strike me as constructive or convincing.  I feel we can stop the horror of abortion.  But I do not feel it can be done by rolling back Roe vs. Wade, or packing the Supreme Court with judges committed to doing this.  As a student of history, I do not think that Americans will give up the legal right to abortion. Should Roe vs Wade be rolled back, Americans will pass other laws to support abortion, or they will find ways to have abortions using new legal and medical terms.

And  much as I am horrified by abortion, I am not sure --  as a student of history – that  Americans should give up the right to abortion.

I am also not convinced that all of those advocating anti-abortion positions in the public sphere are necessarily practical or sincere. I have not heard convincing arguments put forth by anti-abortion politicians as to how Americans could be forced to give birth to children that Americans do not want to bear.  And more to the point, I have not heard  convincing arguments from these anti-abortion politicians as to how we can prevent the horror of abortion right now, given the social situations we have. (source)

I know many will question going to the Democrats, especially endorsing Hillary! for any move forward on restricting abortion. It would be tempting to think Mrs. Rice has just given in to the MSM portrayal of the prolife side as ranting and raving. However, she is known for careful research and I would counsel against taking that easy out.

We should instead, take her words to heart. What more do our prolife politicians suggest other than just banning abortion? While we should work to bring this decision back to the states, we can't stop there and just mindlessly throw legislation around, as I noted in a previous post:

For those on the side of life for the preborn, the opportunities must be acted on cautiously and with much consideration. Grasping further than wisdom would counsel, could merely result in the pendulum swinging back in the other direction at the next election. By this, I mean that we should not forget how many people have grown up under the Orwellian spin that killing the preborn is a right. We still have a media that will paint just about any abortion regulation as being extreme or find other ways to report the matter that skew perceptions against the pro-life side. Under such conditions, old habits and reflexive beliefs will be hard to dislodge and may become even more rigid if some act too impulsively and without careful deliberation.

While it is true that some states can severely restrict and perhaps even ban abortion with strong support from their residents, they should also consider several parallel actions when that time arrives. In my view, it would not only be wise, but also compassionate to also increase funding for prenatal care for the disadvantaged and provide funding to crisis pregnancy services. I wouldn't mind my taxes being raised for that and I suspect many others would feel the same.

There are pro-life Democrats and pro-choice Republicans. It isn't always as easy as simply choosing one party over another. Yes, the GOP still has a pro-life platform, but when has every Republican voted that way?

Let's think carefully about this issue and how we can move forward. For those inclined, it will take much prayer as well. But while praying, people of faith need to learn how to speak convincingly against abortion, without referencing religion. Otherwise, the idea that being pro-life is forcing religion on others, will only continue to gain strength, despite the fallacy that it is. Anne Rice clearly wants to end abortion, but one side has not given her any hope. We may disagree with her view, but it says something about those in power and speaking publicly that one as thoughtful as Anne Rice cannot see what they say as offering any real possibilities.

Oops - article published too soon

It seems the usual suspects are rushing to undermine the progress report of General Petraeus, before he even gives the report. A recent article, including the usual unnamed military source has this to say.

Americans doubt ‘General Betraeus’ over troop surge

Critics, including one recently retired general, are privately calling him “General Betraeus” on the grounds that he is too ambitious to deliver a balanced report on the war.

Yep, real impressive tactics there, especially the title. Clearly, people are setting the matter up to be that if Petraeus actually gives a report with more positive than negative, it isn't balanced, therefore he lied. In other words, anything that isn't as useful to these people as they would like it to be, will automatically be declared null and void.

The silliness of the article continues with trying to pin the strategy on Bush.

Opponents of the troop surge believe that President George W Bush has been hiding behind Petraeus’s reputation for too long. “The president says the surge is the ‘Petraeus’ strategy. Petraeus should say, ‘No, I work for the president. This is his strategy’,” said Korb.

Because George W. Bush wrote the Army manual on counter-insurgencies? At least the article notes who authored that manual, in the next paragraph.

Petraeus, who studied at Princeton and co-wrote the US army’s new counter-insurgency doctrine, is widely regarded as one of the brightest soldiers of his generation. He has an impressive grasp of military history - including British operations against 1950s Malayan insurgents and in Northern Ireland during the Troubles...

The article includes what some have said is expected from the report. However, it would appear the article was printed a bit too soon with this:

Crocker is said to have almost given up trying to persuade Nouri Al-Maliki, the Iraqi prime minister, to come to a political accommodation with the Sunnis and is concentrating his efforts on wooing tribal sheikhs.

But this report on the 19th shows there is improvement.

Iraqi PM tells Sunni tribes: 'We must unite' (Thanks to Captain Ed)

Iraq's prime minister, a Shiite, flew to Saddam Hussein's hometown Friday and told Sunni tribal chieftains that all Iraqis must unite in the fight to crush al-Qaeda in Iraq and extremist Shiite militias "to save our coming generations."

With the U.S. Congressional majority increasingly antsy to get out of Iraq, Nouri al-Maliki's bold incursion into Tikrit — a city once pampered by Saddam, its favorite son — underlined the prime minister's determination to save his paralyzed government from collapse and prevent further disillusionment in Washington.

The sharp alteration of political course — a willingness to travel to the belly of the Sunni beast and talk with former enemies — suggested a new flexibility from the hardline religious Shiite.

An excerpt from Captain Ed's commentary but be sure to read all of it.

Maliki didn't stop there. He made what looks to be a clean break with Moqtada al-Sadr yesterday, signing an accord with the Kurds and the Supreme Islamic Iraqi Council. The coucil commands the Badr Brigade, which has fought Sadr's forces in the south for control. Maliki apparently has co-opted them into the government, isolating Sadr even further than ever after the radical cleric pulled his ministers from Maliki's government.

Of course the upcoming report is going to have negatives along with the positives. However, that some rush to post an article with a ridiculous title, that does what it can to preemptively undermine the report, says quite a bit about their motivations, none of which is good.

This determination to cut and run, only serves the goals of our enemy. Some are just too foolish or uninformed to see otherwise, others are so narrow-minded as to fully intend that. Hopefully, a sad combination of such people will not become large enough to pull defeat from the jaws of victory and ruin what chances we now have for a great victory against Islamic extremism. If it does, we and our children will have to pay the costs, greatly exceeding what he have paid thus far.

Sometimes being less sensitive is a good thing

But some people will be so sensitive to the conclusions of a recent climate study that they'll resort to all sorts of screeds masquerading as reasoned debate on the subject. Just take a look at Newsweek's last cover story for a hint of what's to come or the use of the term global warming deniers by others.

New research from Stephen Schwartz of Brookhaven National Lab concludes that the Earth’s climate is only about one-third as sensitive to carbon dioxide as the IPCC assumes. Schwartz’s study is “in press” at the Journal of Geophysical Research and you can download a preprint of the study here

[...]

Stephen Schwartz is a pretty mainstream climate scientist. Yet along with dozens of other studies in the scientific literature, his new study belies Al Gore’s claim that there is no legitimate scholarly alternative to climate catastrophism. (source - emphasis in bold mine)

As that post at NRO's The Corner notes, Schwartz does include appropriate caveats, but his conclusions are based on actual data, rather than climate models.

Hopefully, Stephen Schwartz will not be subjected to the threats of professional intimidation that have been thrown around by other people who don't care for those who question the supposed consensus.

Well that explains it.

Geraldo Rivera has lately been lamenting and emoting when pundits and regular folk notice that some illegal aliens are able to commit horrible crimes against Americans. It's rather sad to watch how much he has to spin to get around the obvious point that they can kill and injure American citizens because they happen to be located in America - illegally.

Hot Air has a video clip here. The discussion is about Jose Carranza, details in this story.

According to FOX 5 New York, a sexual attack may have occurred before Terrance Aeriel, Iofemi Hightower and Dashon Harvey were shot to death, and a fourth victim, 19-year old Natasha Aerial, was critically wounded.

The suspect in the sexual assault, Peruvian national Jose Carranza, is an illegal immigrant previously charged with raping a 5-year-old. Carranza surrendered to Newark Mayor Cory Booker on Thursday and plead not guilty to to three counts of murder and one charge each of attempted murder and robbery in Essex County Superior Court on Friday.

Rivera nearly breaks down sweating at the end when the host makes that rather obvious point about being in the country - illegally. Take time to read the post at Hot Air for Allahpundit's take on Rivera's comments regarding bail.

Silly and desperate spinning, but early in the video I think we have what may be a very good explanation for such mental degradation. Here's a hint from Rosie O'Donnell of all people. I wonder which reader will catch it first?

Either blinding stupidity or intentional deceit

I suppose a third option is intentional deceit so blindingly stupid as to miss the obvious error. A photo and caption by Agence France Presse leaves little else as explanation.

Test questions:

What's a cartridge?

What's a casing?

What's a bullet?

The AFP after their multiple fact checking and editorial reviews, managed to miss every one of those questions. Captain Ed has the story and the incredible (as in fake fake fake) photo/caption, along with a blogger round up about the matter. An excerpt of his comments, but you really need to follow the link and see it for yourself.

The abject failure to comprehend the basic fact that these bullets could not possibly have been shot through a wall into the woman's bed reveals not just ignorance, but a malevolent willful determination to remain ignorant. (source)

Now, how difficult would it be to gain some understanding before running with such a photo and caption?

Bullet - from Wikipedia, notice the diagram under the design section.

or

Cartridge (firearms) again from Wikipedia.

and there is a French version of Wikipedia, so no excuse.

How clueless must one be, to not have a wee bit of suspicion over how such a shiny, perfectly intact bullet managed to penetrate a wall and hit a bed? The level of ignorance in this case even prevented a very quick Internet search to get informed.

Worse yet, if deceit was the intent, and it most certainly was at various levels of the chain of acquiring the photo and creating the caption, it also shows various levels of disdain for the eventual readers. The more aware an individual was of the inaccuracy of the claim and photo and yet still passed it along, the greater their disrespect for those they most surely viewed as merely targets of propaganda, and as being too stupid to notice the lie.

In this case, the willful ignorance that some might legitimately claim only results in being indistinguishable from such depraved motivations. We are at war and maintaining an intentionally clueless condition, only serves the goals of the enemy. This evil will not be merciful to it's useful idiots once it turns it's hatred in their direction, despite being helped to victory by such foolishness.

Barack Obama finds he has a third foot

And promptly inserts that one into his oral orifice, alongside the two already there. In a previous post, I noted how he managed to do a "two step, straight into his own mouth." Apparently the junior Senator, not content to do what any normal naive politician can accomplish, decided to conjure up another appendage to suck on.

For someone reaching for the prize of Commander in Chief of U.S. armed forces, he certainly has a strange way of endearing himself to our soldiers. At a campaign stop he managed to trip over himself and insult our military at the same time.

Asked whether he would move U.S. troops out of Iraq to better fight terrorism elsewhere, he brought up Afghanistan and said, "We've got to get the job done there and that requires us to have enough troops so that we're not just air-raiding villages and killing civilians, which is causing enormous pressure over there." (source - with video)

Yes, our troops, risking their live to prevent the Taliban from returning to power, to revive it's hold on remote areas of Afghanistan, is just so stupid and bloodthirsty, that they do it by carpet bombing villages and killing civilians.

In that previous post, I speculated, with much sarcasm, that Obama was throwing such statements around to make it clear that he wasn't aiming for the Vice President slot and had his eye on the Presidency. After all, who would want someone so foolish, uninformed and reckless with public statements as a running mate? I have to concede that I may have been wrong. This record of verbal stupidity indicates that Barack Obama, U.S. Senator, Democrat, is actually vying for the job of Ted Rall.

By MSM accounts the junior Democrat Senator has been off to a good start in the Presidential race. A good start at being a foul minded, cretin pretending to be a cartoonist, that is. Either that or he's just too stupid to be in the race or even Congress in the first place. Then again, he may be talented enough to be all of that at the same time.

Christopher Hitchens - a fundie Christian?

It seems that some people think that mostly fundie Christians are the ones foolish enough to agree with BushChimpHitlerCheneyHaliburton concerning staying in Iraq until we've defeated the enemy. Even worse that such people think victory is even possible is, in their view, only further evidence of their lack of intellect, typical of these primitive religionists in general.

Unfortunately for this extreme view, Hitchens remains a staunch atheist, while offering good arguments for continuing in Iraq. His credentials as a pugilist in service to the neo atheists fighting against religion have not been softened of late with his most recent book, "God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything". Yet, at the same time, he continues to offer more of the following:

Foolish myths about al-Qaida in Mesopotamia. (thanks to Instapundit)

...believers are models of lucidity when compared to the hair-splitting secularists who cannot accept that al-Qaida in Mesopotamia is a branch of al-Qaida itself.

[...]

The facts as we have them are not at all friendly to this view of the situation, whether it be the "hard" view that al-Qaida terrorism is a "resistance" to Western imperialism or the "soft" view that we have only created the monster in Iraq by intervening there.

[...]

To say that the attempt to Talibanize Iraq would not be happening at all if coalition forces were not present is to make two unsafe assumptions and one possibly suicidal one.

[...]

If I am right about this, an enormous prize is within our reach.

[...]

Perhaps even some Christians could also learn something from the man on this matter facing the civilized world. This is not a threat we should shrink back from, just because a Jesus loving, prolife Texan who has poor presentation skills is trying to lead the world to stand against this menace.

If eloquence and lack of religion are requirements (shallow as that is) for one to allow themselves to be convinced, then Mr. Hitchens more than adequately meets the need.
