I surrender

According to the Demoncraps that is. I am after all American, and pretty sure I qualify as a people. So this constant refrain of theirs, the "American people" want blah blah blah, must mean they think I want to surrender in Iraq, judging from their strutting, preening and foolish votes of late.

Apparently, leadership in their view, is talking down the United States and our military at every opportunity, ignoring any positive events on the ground in Iraq, having a media that echoes such idiocy and then following the resulting polls.

Never mind that polls also show:

Huge numbers of Americans don’t know jack about their government or politics. According to a Pew Research Center survey released last week, 31 percent of Americans don’t know who the vice president is, fewer than half are aware that Nancy Pelosi is the speaker of the House, a mere 29 percent can identify “Scooter” Libby as the convicted former chief of staff of the vice president, and only 15 percent can name Harry Reid when asked who is the Senate majority leader. (Jonah Goldberg - The Will of the Uniformed)

But we know true leadership requires courage and at times making a stand against strong opposition. If they can't remain steadfast in the face of manufactured polls of the barely informed, we shouldn't be surprised that they choose to run from the enemy, despite the pretty words they try to put around it. As Jonah Goldberg continues in that same article:

...the laziness, spinelessness, and vanity of political elites. Citing polls as proof you’re on the right side of an argument is often a symptom of intellectual cowardice.

As for those who assert that our presence is the cause of the fighting and we need only to pull back, Senator Joe Lieberman puts that matter of blind faith to rest quite well. Be sure to read his entire speech, he makes a number of good points.

My colleague from Nevada, in other words, is suggesting that the insurgency is being provoked by the very presence of American troops. By diminishing that presence, then, he believes the insurgency will diminish.

But I ask my colleagues—where is the evidence to support this theory? Since 2003, and before General Petraeus took command, U.S. forces were ordered on several occasions to pull back from Iraqi cities and regions, including Mosul and Fallujah and Tel’Afar and Baghdad. And what happened in these places? Did they stabilize when American troops left? Did the insurgency go away?

On the contrary—in each of these places where U.S. forces pulled back, Al Qaeda rushed in. Rather than becoming islands of peace, they became safe havens for terrorists, islands of fear and violence.

So I ask advocates of withdrawal: on what evidence, on what data, have you concluded that pulling U.S. troops out will weaken the insurgency, when every single experience we have had since 2003 suggests that this legislation will strengthen it? (Thanks to Cap'n Ed)

Failure in Iraq is failure in the War on Terror. Oops, sorry, I forgot, some politicians think we shouldn't use that term. Well screw them. We are in a global war, Iraq being a central focus, at this time. To run from this enemy, only encourages them. Our enemy has stated that time and again and shown this repeatedly as Joe Liberman so clearly stated.

We only show our soft underbelly, our decadence and inability to stand against adversity if we let these politicians destroy what we've done and still can do in Iraq. President Bush will veto their latest bill of surrender, but Americans need to show these politicians there is a price to pay for their cowardice and political manipulations that endanger this country. The only polls that really matter are election results. Hopefully Americans will wake up and see the danger of the short-sighted cynical games being played by the usual suspects. If they do, hopefully it won't be too late.

O'Donnell, keeping it in the family

Ok, they're not related, but they might as well be with the flippin' idiocy that issues forth from their orifices. Which orifice, is rather debatable, considering the outright lunacy and inaccuracies Rosie O'donnell has put out there about 9-11 and now, Lawrence O'Donnell, with his weighing in on the VTech murders.

Larry O'Donnell's stupidity in bullet point fashion

  • Automatic weapons
  • Spraying bullets
  • High capacity magazines unavailable under "assault" weapons ban

Video at HotAir.

O'Donnell also argues that if it were not for Cho having automatic weapons and spraying bullets, students could have tackled him, apparently no need for them to have firearms. Uh, sorry buddy, the foundation of your argument is completely wrong, and non-existent, leaving your conclusion with no support. The weapons were semi-automatic. One pull of the trigger, one shot.

That being the case, I wonder if he would now say that the police don't need firearms. They do have bullet proof vests at their disposal after all. What's that? Don't be silly? Hey, I'm not the one making the foolish argument, only showing the stupidity it leads to. We see time and time again, what "gun free" zones accomplish. While it is possible that brave and determined individuals could overcome someone like the Virginia Tech killer, the odds of them being successful are drastically reduced if all they're allowed to have our their own fists as weapons.

The chance that enough or even one will resist is also reduced if the fight to survive, to actually resist has been blunted by societal pressures. As others have noted there is a coddling and infantilizing that is occurring in our culture. The tendency is to rely on those at the top for everything, including protection from violence. Best to just wait it out, rather than resist. It's bad enough to work such a view into society, but then to also remove a practical tool for self defense, from those who would resist, only makes sure everyone is unreasonably vulnerable, as the Virginia Tech murders demonstrate. This may create a reinforcing loop, with people feeling less safe and secure, yet having little choice but to rely on others to protect them. As we have seen, once again, the police for all their efforts, are rarely there at the moment of violence. Those who are on scene, have few options, other than to be victims.

It's a dangerous and deadly game to destroy the spirit to survive and also to deny the practical tools to aide in that. Those like Larry O'Donnell, who clearly have no clue regarding the subject matter, participate either by sheer stupidity or calculated deceit. The end result being the same either way. People die, that may have had a chance otherwise. But hey, as long as you can emote on camera, with self-righteous indignation, the hell with the facts. Never mind the little detail that the opportunity for such railing could have been avoided or the magnitude of the event greatly reduced, if only law-abiding citizens had the tools to defend themselves.

Uh-oh, he said G-d exists!

But it was at the CMT Music Awards so the crowd roared in approval. I don't know Jeff Foxworthy's religious beliefs or personal values but he does give a good speech.

See the video at HotAir.

A few quotes as he talks about country music:

"It doesn't take political sides on things as ugly as war..."

"We sing about God because we believe in him, we're not trying to offend anybody but the evidence we have seen of him in our small little lives, trumps your opinion about whether or not He exists."

I guess he won't be winning a Grammy after that, though I get the impression from this speech, that he could care less.

This is getting ridiculous

It would seem the Virginia Tech killings were not tragic enough in their immediate effect, or in the lasting trauma for those who knew someone that was killed. Before the grieving process can hardly move beyond the initial stages, much foolishness is being shown in many quarters.

Eight states, at this point, have had to deal with threats in schools, the claim of several is that they’ll do better than the VTech killer or set a new record. Clearly, there are unstable people waiting for encouragement, but it would hardly be surprising that some think making such threats is a legitimate form of humor. What that says about them or their upbringing is certainly not positive.

We also have "experts" weighing in with their foolish blather. I just saw on the news one of these pontificators commenting on Cho's use of hollow point bullets. He said that you don't need these for home defense as you're just trying to stop an immediate threat; these bullets are just for killing. Well, dork boy, if someone keeps coming at you, after you've brandished a firearm, they've just indicated that killing them may be your only choice. Best have something to do so quickly. Also, hollow points reduce the chance for ricochet and over-penetration, so are a better choice for home defense. You do want to reduce the chance of punching through to the next room with a great deal of energy left, when you may have a loved one in there.

Poor little "expert" might freak if he knew what many carry for self-defense and what I would consider carrying if I had the money to practice often with the ammunition.

Hydra-shok

Hydra-Shok

"The post in the center of these rounds is supposed to direct hydraulic pressure away from the center of the hollow point cavity and toward the cavity walls thereby aiding and amplifying the bullets chances of expansion even at lower velocities. When the round first came out many people dismissed it as a gimick but tests have been done with and without the post and the fact is the post DOES INCREASE expansion reliability."

What I've considered using:

RBCD Ammunition Performance in 10% Ordance Gelatin

380gelatinRBCD

RBCD Performance Plus 380 ACP 45 gr. TFSP

shot at 30' into 8"x8"x12" 10% Calibrated Gelatin through four sheets 13 oz. denim cloth. Entrance through left end, no exit.

Once again, the MSM shows that it's rather clueless regarding firearms, or so reflexively biased, that stupidity can't be avoided. Some are already lamenting America's gun culture, yet the lesson we should learn from this and other shootings is that defenseless people tend to end up as victims. Virginia Tech banned firearms on campus, even for students that were licensed to carry by the state, despite an earlier incident at another school being stopped by armed students.

Then there is more yammering jackassery from the queen of such, Keith Olbermann. Little Keith whined about the "assault" weapons ban expiring under the Bush administration and a Republican Congress and this allowing Cho to get high-capacity magazines.

Just a little problem for Olberbitchh. Such magazines were still available during the "assault" weapons ban. But hey, let's not let facts get in the way of our ranting, just so we can slam the President with an incredibly stupid attempt at association that would be entertaining for it's Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon silliness, were it not for people actually being killed. Just a suggestion, how about we blame the killer?

I won't be surprised if some start attacking online gun retailers next, as Cho had purchased one firearm from such a business. I have yet to see the MSM mention that such retailers ship to a licensed firearms dealer that's local to the buyer and then the same procedures/regulations are followed. But such details are hardly useful if all one wants to do is fit things into their template and bias against guns and gun ownership.

Fortunately, enough people in America have seen the folly of adding more laws that criminals, surprise surprise, tend to ignore, that even Democrats have said we shouldn't rush to add more legislation. Common sense continues, with Tennessee moving to repeal the gun ban on state property. It may be that an increasing number of law-abiding citizens are realizing that gun control is best described as making sure you hit center of mass. The MSM might want to consider that if that bothers them, they have company. Unfortunately, their companions would include the criminal element in society and those who harbor delusions and thoughts of inflicting violence on innocent people. Much easier to do that, as we saw at Virginia Tech, if law-abiding citizens are denied a tool and practical means for defending themselves. Not that the MSM has any shame left.

---

I'm not the only one that's noticed the foolishness. Confederate Yankee makes many of the same points I've made but also includes a bit more detail on several. Turns out the "expert" is Joseph Vince, a retired ATF agent. That someone who enforced firearm laws, would be so wrong on the matter of ammunition is disturbing to say the least.

How to rush to failure

Sometimes we can be in such a hurry to respond in debate that we trip over ourselves in doing so. This discussion began over an individual making the following claim concerning Flavius Josephus:

Channing said:

The Josephus accounts were 5th (or 4th?) century forgeries.

My reply:

Channing,

You're mistaken concerning Josephus. The consensus of scholars, regardless of religious faith or non-faith is that he mentioned Jesus. The debate is over how much were later Christian interpolations/additions to what Josephus did say

---

Channing then replied with a number of quotes introduced in this manner:

I disagree that I am mistaken at all. Mentioning "Jesus" is not mentioning the man who claimed to be the son of God, as Jesus was a very popular name. But there is a seemingly unanimous consensus that the entire passage found earlier in the work was a forgery by Bishop Eusebius, who claimed that it was OK to lie in order to "bring people closer to the truth of God". But don't take my word for it.

Below are quotes from modern Christian scholars, who generally concede that the passage is a forgery. Dr. Lardner, one of the ablest defenders of Christianity, adduces the following arguments against its genuineness:

[...]

His reply continued with substantial quotes from these modern Christian scholars.

The modern Christian scholars he listed and his descriptions:

Dr. Lardner, one of the ablest defenders of Christianity,

Bishop Warburton

Rev. Dr. Giles, of the Established Church of England

The Rev. S. Baring-Gould

Dr. Chalmers

Canon Farrar, who has written the ablest Christian life of Christ yet penned

The Rev. Dr. Hooykaas (endorsed by eminent Dutch critic, Dr. Kuenen)

Dr. Alexander Campbell, one of America’s ablest Christian apologists

Just one problem right from the start. It appears he has quite a different notion of what the word modern means as can be seen in my full reply as follows:

---

Dr. Lardner, from what I can find, died in 1768; his Works was published in 1788

William Warburton (December 24, 1698 – June 7, 1779), was an English critic and churchman, Bishop of Gloucester from 1759.

The Reverend Sabine Baring-Gould (28 January 1834 – 2 January 1924)

Thomas Chalmers (March 17, 1780 - May 31, 1847)

Frederic William Farrar (1831-1903) Canon of Westminster in 1876

Rev. Dr. Hooykaas (1837-1894)

Dr. Alexander Campbell (1788-1866)

Judging from your list of outdated sources I have to wonder if you got it from Remsburg (1848-1919), the quality of whose work is noted here:

Most of Remsburg's authorities are not listed by Schaff's History of the Christian Church (Warburton, Baring-Gould, Dr Giles, Chalmers, Campbell) because they either are not scholars or because they're too outdated - Schaff's scholarship (which Remsburg acknowledges elsewhere) goes back to about 1840. On the other hand, Schaff has lists of scholars which go for the full authenticity of the passage (Hauteville, Oberthür, Bretschneider, Böhmert, Whiston, Schoedel, Böttger), some for partial (Paulus, Heinichen, Gieseler, Weizsäcker, Renan, Farrar - Farrar's quote being after a discussion on Herod and is non-analytical) and two for "we think there was a negative mention of Christ here but the interpolator changed it" viewpoint (Paret, Ewald), all of which totally contradicts Remsburg's claim that Christian scholarship rejects Josephus as a historical witness.

What's so laughable about this is, Remsburg has all this information in front of him, because he quotes from the same chapter (Schaff, Vol.1 chapter 2) in The Christ, chapter 7! Clearly then, this work under study is presenting "arguments I like" rather than contemporary, analytical scholarship. So much for Remsburg the journalist!

As for Giles he runs counter to the current consensus and objections he and others may raise are dealt with here. Concerning why the Ante-Nicene Fathers would not mention Josephus here.

On the basis of the data, the argument from absence seems very shaky indeed.

And since he disses Eusebius might as well deal with that notion as well. See a long tracking of the claims, "quotes" and convenient inferences that are less than charitable here.

Regarding the current consensus

Although Josephus' reference to the martyrdom of James is universally accepted by critical scholars, there has been more controversy over the fuller reference to Jesus. The TF contains some obvious Christian glosses that no Jew would have written; such as "he was the Christ" and "he appeared to them alive again the third day."

A strong majority of scholars, however, have concluded that much of the TF is authentic to Josephus. In his book Josephus and Modern Scholarship, Professor Feldman reports that between 1937 to 1980, of 52 scholars reviewing the subject, 39 found portions of the TF to be authentic. Peter Kirby's own review of the literature, in an article discussing the TF in depth, shows that the trend in modern scholarship has moved even more dramatically towards partial authenticity: "In my own reading of thirteen books since 1980 that touch upon the passage, ten out of thirteen argue the Testimonium to be partly genuine, while the other three maintain it to be entirely spurious. Coincidentally, the same three books also argue that Jesus did not exist." (Kirby, Testamonium Flavianum, 2001). Though my own studies have revealed a similar trend (about 15 to 1 for partial authenticity, with the exception being a Jesus Mythologist), I do not believe that it is a coincidence that it is Jesus Mythologists who are carrying the water against the partial authenticity theory. Even the partial validity of this one passage is enough to sink their entire argument.

Notably, the consensus for partial authenticity is held by scholars from diverse perspectives. Liberal commentators such as Robert Funk, J. Dominic Crossan, and A.N. Wilson, accept a substantial part of the TF as originally Josephan. So do Jewish scholars, such as Geza Vermes, Louis H. Feldman, and Paul Winter and secular scholars such as E.P. Sanders and Paula Fredrikson. Even Jeff Lowder, co-founder of the Secular Web, recognizes the merits of the partial authenticity theory. (Lowder, Josh McDowell's Evidence for Jesus: Is it Reliable? 2000). Paula Fredrikson sums up the state of the question among scholars: "Most scholars currently incline to see the passage as basically authentic, with a few later insertions by Christian scribes." (Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews, page 249).

---

You can see his entire reply here, if you're interested in outdated "scholarship".

I did miss the eminent Dutch critic, Dr. Kuenen, so let's see who that is. Judging from the information I would say this is the individual Channing meant. With his life spanning September 16, 1828 - December 10, 1891, we again have outdated information, to say the least.

I suppose he thought he could panic me with his attempt at a data dump. But a little research shows that his jump to use what I suspect was a handy copy/paste, was merely outdated information, something he was clearly unaware of, with his claim that these were modern views.

It will be interesting to see if he concedes anything. I may have more later as he had additional comments about contemporary secular mentions of Jesus, or lack thereof for some writers of that time period.

Oh, as I noted later, in a reply to another in that thread:

I did forget something

Channing - "Below are quotes from modern Christian scholars"

me - BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

Thwwaaaap!

A woman should sit and be quite dork, gets a verbal slap down from a Muslim woman. She even manages to look quite stylish while doing so, despite the hijab, much better than the picnic table pattern of the slappee. And then there's the woman leading the discussion showing *gasp* her hair and *gasp* her neck and *gasp* her hands, both sides even!

The topic is "Does the appearance of Saudi women on TV run counter to Islamic law?"

A couple of take away quotes, but be sure to watch the video, more great sound bites from this courageous woman.

...I demand that my face, which constitutes my identity, be shown.

[...]

You, who frighten people with Hell, have brought them a hell on earth.

[...]

You've prevented the mind from operating, thinking, comparing and choosing, even though it is the same mind that the Creator gave people in order to choose between Paradise and Hell.

Video here (Thanks to HotAir)

Such women should be applauded, as they risk much by taking such a stand. Hopefully, reform will continue in the Middle East and within Islam so that such views are eventually not seen as out of the ordinary nor something that we marvel at because of the lack of fear displayed when a woman dares to speak and say there is nothing wrong with her being on TV.

Yippi-kay-ya, Mother F*****

Another Die Hard movie is coming out. While it would be nice to see John McClane taking on Islamofacists, it still looks to be good fun. I suppose that an actual real word and current villain would get in the way of the escapist fun of this movie genre. Still, John McClane quipping his smart aleck lines to someone like Iran's little bearded jackass, whilst improvising his means of beating the crap out of said tyrant, because he ran out of bullets, would be quite entertaining.

Thanks to HotAir and to John who had the best comment there:

Dork: I’m a Mac.

John McClane: And I’m a PC. Yippi-kay-ya, Mother ******

I'm destroying Democracy :D

But Rosie forgot 2 breathe before typing again.

Regarding her 9-11 conspiracy idiocy and the justified criticism for it she now says:

If the very act of asking is so destabilizing for people, than I have to wonder whether the fabric of our democracy is indeed so raveled it is beyond salvage. (thanks to HotAir)

Rosie isn't just asking, she's stating that it's impossible for a building to fall by fire alone and for the fires to have melted the steel in regard to WTC-7. If she were really seeking truth, she would know that steel doesn't need to melt to lose much of it's strength. She would also know that WTC-7 had suffered a great deal of damage from the towers collapsing because of the very close proximity. One has to also consider the seismic forces generated by the collapse of such large structures and the affect that had on nearby buildings.

Maybe one of these days Rosie will remember 2 breathe before she yammers away on her blog or opens her trap on television. Not that I'm foolish enough to hold my breath waiting for that to occur. However, it does appear Barbara Walters and the suits at ABC may be suffering from oxygen deprivation by still allowing this foolishness named Rosie to continue to have air time.

OTA Open Trackback 04.02.07

As the lovely Samantha Burns says:

Please use this space to trackback your best, main page articles (I just require a link to this article, as always). Also, if you have something to discuss, it is welcomed here as well.

ADVICE: Trackback main blog page articles to showcase your work (and it will help to attract readers).

Yep, I was in a plagirizing mood ;-) Nevertheless, it's a good way to draw more attention to your blog, so trackback away :-) I'll have one of these each Monday, because, well, I hate Mondays ;-p

Please refrain from using international accent marks in your post url. The inline trackback script will fail if those are used.

Do NOT link your open trackback post here. Use Linkfest Haven instead.
