Juan Cole is a liar
Or, just too lazy to do basic research or just so bigoted that he's both. His column at Salon.com, which he somehow managed to spit out without any report yet of injury to himself or innocent bystanders, is so out of date, starting with the first paragraph, that it's a wonder that Salon hasn't already replaced him with a chimpanzee typing up articles in return for payment in bananas.
Yes, the article is that bad. Let's examine the first paragraph, from which all else follows, in bullet point fashion. (thanks to HotAir headlines)
He introduces the errors thusly:
But the values of his handpicked running mate, Sarah Palin, more resemble those of Muslim fundamentalists than they do those of the Founding Fathers.
And now the egregious errors:
- censorship
- Nope wrong
- By the way chump, John Adams, a founding father, did (reluctantly) sign the Aliens and Sedition Acts.
- the teaching of creationism in schools
- Wrong again
- attributing government policy to God's will
- Wrong again
The above are all addressed here and/or here. These links are also at the top of my blog and are being kept updated by the authors. I would provide direct links to each point but that option isn't available yet, but these issues are currently easy to find.
Now we move to several points that indicate how much of an idiot little Juan strives to be. In Juan's little world, if you're pro-life, or skeptical about global warming, you're nearly the equal of a fundamentalist Muslim, or in the case of Sarah Palin, Juan attempts to twist a joke she made in her convention speech.
What is the difference between Palin and a Muslim fundamentalist? Lipstick.
But let's look at those issues. While Sarah Palin does hold a very strict pro-life position, she has not pushed for the changing of Alaskan abortion laws, except to support a ban on partial birth abortions and a parental consent law. When asked during campaigns, she has said she would support measures that came up from the people, however, her priorities have been cleaning up government corruption, energy production and scaling back earmarks. With regard to social policies, she's been fairly "hands-off". It might be too sophisticated for Juan to understand, but one's pro-life views, and how much one would implement them as law or policy can be separate issues, which has been demonstrated by Palin's tenure as Governor.
He also mentions "climate change" or what used to be called global warming. Yes, Sarah Palin is personally skeptical, however, she also created several groups to study climate change and offer recommendations. There's a bit more on that at one of the links referenced earlier.
It's pretty obvious what Juan is attempting with the smear of just like a Muslim fundamentalist. He emphasizes his intent with this.
Palin agrees with Hamas and Saudi Arabia rather than supporting tolerance and democratic precepts.
It's a wonder that Juan resisted the urge to place (kaboom!) after Hamas and (bhurka!) after Saudi Arabia. Google him if you must but he doesn't get any better than the factual errors and bigotry that he begins with. Come to think of it, replacing Juan Cole with a chimpanzee might not save money. Housing, food and all wouldn't be cheap. Besides, Juan Cole has obviously mastered the art of reaching around to his ass and flinging poop from it.
