Miscellaneous meanderings and philosophical ramblings. The title from a spiral notebook I used to jot down my thoughts on religion and other matters some years ago. I like to write, think and express my views on various issues. Robust discussion is welcome.

Just for grins and giggles and because I can - v.2

Another post in a myspace group attacking Christianity. Once again, the original post in bold and my replies in normal text. On a side note, the subject of my first grins and giggles post may be working up the energy to give me more material. We can only hope :-)

WARNING: The following may be offensive to some. No...seriously...it might piss you off.

Nah, willful ignorance is merely entertaining - at your expense.

TOP 10 SIGNS YOU'RE A CHRISTIAN

If you people are going to copy/paste, it would be appropriate to give attribution. However, since I tend to be a pack rat, such repetition does make my job easier.

10 - You vigorously deny the existence of thousands of gods claimed by other religions, but feel outraged when someone denies the existence of yours.

Not outraged, just think they are in error. And really, the statement assumes that evidence for all claims to divinity are on equal footing. That is simply not true. Since the last time such drivel was posted, I've dealt with this in a bit more detail here

9 - You feel insulted and "dehumanized" when scientists say that people evolved from other life forms, but you have no problem with the Biblical claim that we were created from dirt.

I suppose young earth creationists may feel that way but I dont. I get the impression someone likes to generalize a bit too much.

8 - You laugh at polytheists, but you have no problem believing in a Triune God.

Who laughs? again generalization. And multiple gods is not the same as a Triune God and again the level of evidence for each belief is not one the same level of quality or quantity.

7 - Your face turns purple when you hear of the "atrocities" attributed to Allah, but you don't even flinch when hearing about how God/Jehovah slaughtered all the babies of Egypt in "Exodus" and ordered the elimination of entire ethnic groups in "Joshua" including women, children, and trees!

One should study before spouting, well copy/past in this instance. Being informed might lead to one not embarrasing themselves by throwing around a list filled with such uninformed foolishness.

OT passages on what God avenges
God is wrathful, vengeful, and jealous?
What about God's cruelty to the Midianites in Numbers 31?!
How could a God of Love order the massacre/annihilation of the Canaanites?
shouldn't the butchering of the Amalekite children be considered war crimes?

6 - You laugh at Hindu beliefs that deify humans, and Greek claims about gods sleeping with women, but you have no problem believing that the Holy Spirit impregnated Mary, who then gave birth to a man-god who got killed, came back to life and then ascended into the sky.

Not sure who is laughing, this person apparently has quite an imagination or just likes the argumentum ad hominem fallacy. Also, the Christian notion is not that the Holy Spirit impregnated Mary with some sort of ecto plasma hard on. If one wants to be all anthropomorphic like that fine but dont mistake your misconceptions for Christian doctrine.

5 - You are willing to spend your life looking for little loopholes in the scientifically established age of Earth (few billion years), but you find nothing wrong with believing dates recorded by Bronze Age tribesmen sitting in their tents and guessing that Earth is a few generations old.

Another generalization, all Christians do not believe in a young earth. At least the writer is consistently fallacious.

4 - You believe that the entire population of this planet with the exception of those who share your beliefs -- though excluding those in all rival sects - will spend Eternity in an infinite Hell of Suffering. And yet consider your religion the most "tolerant" and "loving."

The end comes down to one saying - God thy will be done or God saying to them -thy will be done.

God cannot force someone to choose to love him and enjoy being in his presence.

3 - While modern science, history, geology, biology, and physics have failed to convince you otherwise, some idiot rolling around on the floor speaking in "tongues" may be all the evidence you need to "prove" Christianity.

nope, all Christians do not speak in tongues and science isnt so good at explaining origins anyway.

2 - You define 0.01 as a "high success rate" when it comes to answered prayers. You consider that to be evidence that prayer works. And you think that the remaining 99.99 FAILURE was simply the will of God.

Made up statistics dont make for convincing arguments. Also, people on your side, like to say God is not worthy of worship because evil exists in the world and being all-powerful it must be his fault. Funny, they refuse to credit him for all the good that also exists.

1 - You actually know a lot less than many atheists and agnostics do about the Bible, Christianity, and church history - but still call yourself a Christian.

Sure, some Christians are under informed but I could say the same about some atheists considering the arguments for not believing that I have seen lately, this list being a shining example. But hey, the author has been generalizing throughout this, might as well end it that way.

I wonder, is anyone brave or stupid enough to take credit for this list?
