Miscellaneous meanderings and philosophical ramblings. The title from a spiral notebook I used to jot down my thoughts on religion and other matters some years ago. I like to write, think and express my views on various issues. Robust discussion is welcome.

Covering all your bases

Even if it means letting an enemy kill our soldiers.

The following story covers the recent presentation of evidence that Iran is helping to kill our troops in Iraq.

U.S. Says Arms Link Iranians to Iraqi Shiites

BAGHDAD, Feb. 11 — After weeks of internal debate, senior United States military officials on Sunday literally put on the table their first public evidence of the contentious assertion that Iran supplies Shiite extremist groups in Iraq with some of the most lethal weapons in the war. They said those weapons had been used to kill more than 170 Americans in the past three years.

Be sure to read it all. It's quite interesting what we've been able to put together that demonstrates Iranian involvement in increasing violence in Iraq and helping to kill our troops. However, what I would like focus on is this gem of talking out both sides of one's mouth at the very end of the article.

Senator John D. Rockefeller IV, the West Virginia Democrat who chairs the Senate Intelligence Committee, said last month that he believed that Iranian operatives inside Iraq were supporting Shiite militias and working against American troops.

But he also asserted that the White House had a poor understanding of Iranian calculations and added that he was concerned that the Bush administration was building a case for a more confrontational policy toward Tehran.

His use of the word "but" apparently means completely disregard what I said before it. What more does one need to understand when another country is helping to kill our soldiers? Notice his weasel words, "working against our troops". And exactly what does that mean Senator, tickling them so they can't shoot straight? Actually stating that it means killing our troops makes saying "but", quite a bit more difficult doesn't it?

Heaven forbid, that we have a more confrontational policy towards Tehran, they only want to kill our soldiers and Iraqis after all. Apparently the Senator would prefer to criticize the Bush administration, rather than work with it to end this danger to our military and Iraqis striving for peace in their country.

As a friend of mine said, "wants all his bases covered, that's a good little democrat". Ain't that special? Cover all your political bases, the hell with doing what's necessary to protect our troops against a deadly adversary, other than cut and run and unrealistically hope that a determined enemy isn't encouraged by that.

Clearly, the title Senate Intelligence Committee is actually an antonym regarding the mental capacity of this particular member of said committee.
